Dr Zulhisyam Abdul Kari, a senior lecturer at UMK's Faculty of Agro-Based Industry, explained that the protein contains hirudin, a naturally occurring compound with properties strikingly similar to heparin, the synthetic anticoagulant widely employed in modern medicine to prevent unwanted blood clotting. The discovery emerged from rigorous laboratory testing that established the leech protein extract's ability to delay blood coagulation to a degree comparable with existing anticoagulant drugs. This finding is particularly significant because it suggests a biological alternative to entirely synthetic pharmaceutical interventions.

Dr Zulhisyam attributed this decline directly to fraud that eroded investor confidence and destabilised industry relationships. Beyond commercial deception, the sector confronts an equally serious environmental threat: wild leech populations inhabiting natural habitats like paddy fields have plummeted due to widespread pesticide and chemical fertiliser use in agriculture. This represents a classic case of industrial farming practices inadvertently destroying the biological resources upon which alternative industries depend.
Governance of Malaysia's leech resources shifted in 2011 when responsibility transferred from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) to the Department of Fisheries Malaysia, reflecting the recognition that leeches required specialist management. This institutional reorganisation acknowledged leeches' importance but has not yet reversed the industry's decline or adequately protected wild populations. The shift also potentially signals that policymakers view leeches through an economic lens—as fisheries resources—rather than purely as wildlife, a reframing that could either facilitate commercial development or risk overexploitation without adequate conservation safeguards.
Dr Zulhisyam has articulated a compelling case for substantially increased research funding to propel leech-derived products toward genuine commercialisation. Molecular biology investigations and additional biochemical studies remain necessary to fully characterise the anticoagulant protein and optimise extraction methodologies for pharmaceutical-grade production. Without adequate investment, the gap between laboratory discovery and market-ready medication will persist, allowing international competitors to potentially develop and patent the same applications.
The researcher's broader advocacy reframes how Malaysian society should conceptualise leeches. Rather than regarding them as parasitic nuisances or marginal creatures, Dr Zulhisyam urges recognition of leeches as a valuable natural resource intertwined with biotechnology's future and the ecosystem's health. Every organism occupies ecological niches, and the sudden loss of leeches from natural systems could trigger unforeseen cascading effects on other species and water quality. Simultaneously, leeches represent untapped bioactive compounds that have evolved over millennia to solve specific biological problems—in this case, preventing blood clotting—solutions that synthetic chemistry continues to imitate.
For Malaysia, the buffalo leech research encapsulates both unrealised opportunity and a critical juncture. The nation possesses the biological resources, research capacity, and geographical advantage to become a global leader in leech-derived pharmaceutical products, yet requires decisive action combining regulatory clarity, research investment, fraud prevention, and habitat protection. The protein's anticoagulant properties could yield valuable medicines, but only if Malaysia prioritises rebuilding its leech farming infrastructure and protecting natural populations from agricultural chemical contamination.
