Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the permanent housing development at Bukit Kiara Longhouse in Kuala Lumpur on June 15, marking a significant milestone for the long-displaced residents. Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, who also represents Sungai Buloh in Parliament, characterised the move as evidence of the administration's determination to address longstanding grievances promptly and fairly.
Under the housing initiative, qualifying families will receive two residential units at no cost. Ramanan underscored that this project will provide tangible support to Kuala Lumpur's economically disadvantaged population, reversing decades of unresolved displacement.
The Prime Minister has also approved an extra RM1 million allocation to Kuala Lumpur City Hall for upkeep of the surrounding area over the next three years. Ramanan noted that while the project's scope may appear limited in scale, its significance for residents who have endured prolonged uncertainty is profound.
The longhouse residents had sought resolution for over 40 years before legal action initiated by their representatives in 2018 finally yielded results. The settlement was achieved while preserving Taman Rimba Kiara, sidestepping contentious development proposals that had been put forward previously. Ramanan stressed that the Prime Minister's decision conveyed an unambiguous message that the government would not postpone justice for its citizens.
