Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has urged government officials and the broader public to exercise restraint when making public statements, avoiding language that could be viewed as disrespectful or inflammatory. Speaking in Putrajaya on June 15, she stressed the importance of steering clear of remarks that could stir sensitivities around race, religion and royalty (3R).
"My advice to everyone is not to use inappropriate language and to avoid 3R issues, not only during election campaigns but at all times," Teo said after officiating an industry dialogue on journalism standards in the capital.
Teo's comments came as the Department of Community Communications (J-KOM) faces scrutiny over its newly appointed director-general Mohd Hisyamuddin Ghazali, who has drawn criticism for allegedly employing unsuitable phrasing in statements since taking office on June 9. Mohd Hisyamuddin replaced Datuk Ismail Yusop in the role.
Teo indicated she has not yet arranged a meeting with Mohd Hisyamuddin to discuss the matter directly, though she intends to convey similar guidance to him personally. Her remarks underscore the government's expectation that public servants maintain professional communication standards while respecting Malaysia's diverse population and constitutional framework.
